Consistent with Harold Alfond’s own giving pattern and philanthropic principles, the Harold Alfond Foundation favors charitable organizations in three broad program areas: education, healthcare, and youth development.
Mr. Alfond believed that every child in the 21st century should have aspirations and access to higher education. Over the course of his lifetime, he supported many educational causes. The Foundation furthers this legacy through capital, endowment, scholarship and programmatic grants to public and private colleges and universities and to private secondary schools. Often to support the construction of athletic facilities and academic buildings, such grants are designed to enhance the student experience and ensure the institution’s long-term growth, sustainability, and prosperity.
Mr. Alfond envisioned the Harold Alfond Foundation making large-scale gifts that would have a significant impact on the economy and on the lives of the people of Maine. One way the Foundation seeks to achieve this vision is by supporting capital campaigns to improve healthcare and educational institutions which further healthcare education. In Central Maine, large scale grants have been awarded to increase operational efficiency, promote collaboration among healthcare entities with similar missions, and improve the delivery of and access to healthcare services.
Though Mr. Alfond was inspired by a number of philanthropic causes, perhaps no cause resonated with him more strongly than youth development. He believed that every young person, regardless of economic circumstances, should have the educational and social opportunities necessary to succeed. One such opportunity is athletics, which, through its promotion of teamwork and healthy competition, Mr. Alfond believed could positively impact the lives of young people. Today, the Harold Alfond Foundation supports organizations whose missions it is to inspire and empower youth through education, leadership, sports and recreation, and summer camp programs.
In addition to the above areas, the Foundation supports other community organizations consistent with Harold Alfond’s pattern of giving.
In the future, the Foundation will continue to adhere to Mr. Alfond’s giving pattern and philanthropic principles, with latitude to allow for evolving community needs. The Trustees will favor projects with high potential to have a major transforming impact and, most notably, will honor Mr. Alfond’s belief in teamwork and his love of competition by continuing to deploy matching challenge grants to inspire and leverage additional giving by others.
The above policies are not fixed, nor are they binding on the Trustees. They are presented as an indication of the Foundation’s current areas of emphasis and support.
